She was looking at Tim as if he had just admitted to beating his grandmother. Tim and I exchanged perplexed glances and then Laurel launched into her rendition of the old "Knock, Knock Orange" joke. I won't even bother telling the whole joke here because it wasn't even funny when I was in the second grade. The "Knock, Knock Orange" joke has been in circulation for untold decades and most people in the greater United States have heard it at some point or other in their lives. Laurel laughed so hard when she got to the punchline that most of the other people in the bar turned around to look at her. This woman was definitely a little off balance. Her behavior continued to degenerate as the minutes ticked by. It became more and more apparent that there were a lot of pathos bubbling under Laurel's deceptively pleasant appearance.

To make a long story short Laurel was one of the least savvy prostitutes in Los Angeles. Somehow she had latched onto me in Larry's Rack Shack instead of any number of horny, drunk patrons who potentially might have given her some money to ply her trade. I like to sit in rundown little bars and let the conversations of the other patrons wash over me as I descend into a relaxing alcoholic haze. That's my way of being social. I've danced in bars for a number of years and have done enough talking to last me for a long time. Occasionally I'll meet a friend for a drink, but that doesn't happen very often. Usually I regret it.

Eventually he located one of those little airplane-style bottles of wine, twisted off the cap, and set it in front of her. "Are you going to need a glass with that?" he asked her. Yep, he definitely did not like her attitude.

Fortunately, right at that moment two leather-clad bikers walked into the room. I could sense Carolyn perk right up. The Crimson Garter is very close to a large Harley-Davidson dealership in Marina del Rey so presumably these two dudes had just come from there. It took them no longer than 2 seconds to spot Carolyn across the dimly lit room. That was amazing. It was so dark that I could barely spot my own hand if I held it in front of my face. One of them smiled jauntily and asked her: "What's a beautiful girl like you doing in a place like this?" Oh, brother. Carolyn smiled right back at him and said: "Looking for a cigarette."

Good grief. These two were a match made in Heaven. The guys ordered two beers and they and Carolyn walked outside into the smoking patio. I stayed inside to guard their leather jackets. One or the other of the bikers came in occasionally to get more drinks so I assumed she was still on the premises. Absently I sipped vodka and listened to the slow music, the clicking of pool balls as one customer practiced his shots, and a Hawaiian guy exhorting the bartended to make sure to add Don Ho to the selections in the jukebox. "Don Ho is Elvis" he kept saying. I found myself silently agreeing with him and wondering if he realized that the Harbor Room in Playa del Rey already had Don Ho in their jukebox.

I was considering telling him that when Carolyn and the boys stumbled in from the beer patio. "Frank and Jordie are going to take us for a ride on their bikes!" she exclaimed happily. I politely declined, but she kept insisting that I join them. They knew she wanted me along so they gamely tried to encourage me to come. It was one of those uncomfortable pressure situations where most individuals would have deferred to the wishes of the group and agreed to go along with their plans. I had no intention and I could tell Carolyn was pissed at me by the time she left with them. They were headed to the Sagebrush Cantina which is a crowded, singles bar/restaurant. "Singles bar" may not be a term that's used much anymore, but it is an accurate description of the place.
